DEFINITION
A breakdown structure (a tree diagram or parent-to-child relationship) is a hierarchy of components of some or all aspects of a project, programme, product or portfolio. There are different types of breakdown structures, some of which are explained below;
  1. Work Breakdown Structure (WBS): It allows to decompose project into small manageable sections or clearly defined deliverables, making it easier to assign tasks, estimate completion times, allocate resources and track progress. There are 2 main types of work breakdown structures, and it is normal to use both in tandem on a project;
    1. Process-oriented: It defines a project in terms of steps, work phases, or functions. e.g. for a road project, WBS would enlist Design, Construction, Earthworks, Asphalt works, Electrical works etc.
    2. Deliverable-oriented: It defines a project in terms of tangible components to be delivered. e.g. for a road project, WBS would enlist Base course, Pavement, Streel Lights, Traffic Signs etc
